Eyelea Injections Q&A

What are Eylea injections?

Eylea is an FDA-approved anti-VEGF treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and retinal vein occlusion. VEGF is an acronym for vascular endothelial growth factor, one of the chemicals that helps your body grow new blood vessels.

Anti-VEGF injections, like Eylea injections, stop abnormal blood vessels from leaking blood or other fluid into your eye and damaging your retina.

What is wet age-related macular degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic condition that damages your macula, which is the part of your retina that provides central vision. There are two types of macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration is more common and develops gradually.

Wet macular degeneration is rare but more severe. It occurs when the blood vessels in your eyes leak blood or other fluids into your eyeball, which damage your retina and your vision.

Wet macular degeneration causes a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Distorted vision
  • Reduced central vision
  • Dull perception of color
  • A blurry or blind spot in your field of vision
  • General haziness in your vision

Wet macular degeneration usually develops suddenly, and your symptoms rapidly worsen. Wet macular degeneration also begins as the dry form of the disease. If you have signs of age-related macular degeneration, you should schedule an appointment at InVision EyeCare right away.

What happens during an Eylea injection?

The team of ophthalmologists at InVision EyeCare makes Eylea injections directly into your eye, delivering the anti-VEGF chemical to the blood vessels on or near your retina at the back of your eye. Eylea injections are provided once every four weeks for the first 12 weeks of your treatment. Then, you only need to have Eylea injections every two months.

Your appointments for the injections only last around 15 minutes, and the injection itself only takes seconds. Before your injections, your eyes and eyelids will be cleaned to prepare you for the injection. Numbing eye drops will also be provided to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. After your injection, your ophthalmologist checks your vision and the pressure in your eyeball before you go home.

If you have wet age-related macular degeneration and want to know if Eylea injections are right for you, call InVision EyeCare or schedule a consultation online.
