"Dr. Hedaya prefers Surface Laser to LASIK for laser vision correction procedures." .....Why?
Surface Laser New Jersey (LASEK New Jersey / PRK New Jersey)

Surface Laser is a group of laser eye surgery procedures known as PRK or LASEK. Dr Edward Hedaya is a New Jersey Surface Laser (PRK/ LASEK) specialist. This webpage provides information about why Dr Hedaya prefers Surface Laser (PRK/ LASEK) over LASIK. He believes Surface Laser offers greater safety, both short and long term, over Lasik. This holds even if ‘all laser Lasik’ is performed.
Dr. Hedaya uses the LADARVISION 4000 flying spot Excimer laser system for the corneal contour reshaping in both the Lasik & Surface laser procedures. The LADARVISION can perform both standard & Custom Laser procedures. (See checkbox below) The LADARVISION uses a combination of propriety software and computer controls to reliably treat myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. The average Surface Laser procedure takes about 3 minutes per eye, with the laser portion of the procedure averaging less than one minute.
The safety of Surface Laser is related to the absence of a corneal flap incision. (Press to play PowerPoint). In Surface Laser the integrity and the strength of the cornea is better retained since no surgical flap incision is created as in Lasik. (see comparison chart). Educated patients generally wish to avoid the corneal flap incision of Lasik.
“What happens if I move to a new doctor?”
You will find comfort in knowing that the LADARVISION flying spot laser is the only laser in the world fast enough to fully track and treat your eye despite movements. It utilizes a FDA approved NASA developed laser tracker.
This technology was developed as a way of tracking satellites during the Reagan administration's Strategic Defense Initiative. The active tracker of the laser will track the eye with laser radar 4000 times per second, and the scanning mirrors will adjust in order to place the laser beam in the correct position, even when the eye moves. No other FDA approved laser offers tracking capability.
Following Surface Laser, the corneal surface must heal. This usually takes 3-4 days. While the visual recovery is longer in Surface Laser than Lasik, the results are as good or even better for some parameters. Over 98% see 20/40 or better after surgery.
Patients who are not good candidates for LASIK (due to abnormally thin corneas, dry eyes, unusually deep-set eyes or are in jobs that put them at risk for eye injury) can undergo Surface Laser with great success. Why? Because Surface Laser is safer! Surface Laser popularity is growing each year as surgeons realize the safety profile. The fact is many Lasik surgeons recommend Surface Laser for their own family members over Lasik.
Surface Laser (Lasek) can be performed with the standard laser or the newer Custom Cornea®.
