Refractive surgery was revolutionized by the invention of the Excimer laser in the early 1980's and has been through numerous clinical trials to determine its safety and effectiveness. It is now commonly used to treat myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. At this time, there are Excimer laser machines that, with a combination of masks and computer controls, can reliably treat myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. These procedures help alter the way the light is focused on the retina by using precise surgical techniques to reshape the front surface of the eye called the cornea.
