Premium Lifestyle Replacement Lens Implants in New Jersey

To provide our New Jersey cataract surgery patients with excellent postoperative vision, we offer premium lifestyle replacement lenses, also known as premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs). Although standard replacement lenses are also sufficient, most patients who receive these traditional lenses still require eyeglasses after surgery. Lifestyle Lens Implants (IOL’s), on the other hand, are much more versatile and greatly reduce our patients' need for visual aids. In fact, Lifestyle Lens Implants (IOL’s) allows us to take vision correction after cataract surgery to a new level by restoring our patients' ability to focus on objects at various distances.
In order to allow progress in cataract surgery lens design, Congress has permitted implant manufacturers to add a surcharge for LifeStyle Lens Implants. This can cost as much as $2500 extra per eye. These are an excellent option for patients with the resources to better expand their range of unaided vision assuming Dr. Hedaya feels they are a good candidate.
There are three types of lenses.
- Accommodating lenses - Good for distance and intermediate vision - Crystalens
- Multifocal lenses - Good for unaided distance and nearer vision – ReStor, Tecnis
- Toric lenses - Good for unaided distance vision in patients with astigmatism.
Crystalens Accommodative Lens Implant:
Dr. Edward Hedaya is a well known New Jersey Crystalens specialist. He has helped many New Jersey Monmouth and Ocean County patients expand their range of vision with less dependence on glasses. Crystalens is the only lens recognized by the FDA in the accommodative category. For most patients over the age of 45, life without reading glasses or bifocals is something they either experienced before presbyopia or they just dreamed about for most of their lives. The Crystalens mimics the natural lens by changing focus and can increase the range of unaided vision both far and close. Crystalens causes little if any glare, halos, or starbursts and is very successful at producing excellent and intermediate for most people. This means they can shave, put on make-up, do computer work, cook, see their car dashboard and read most medium sized print without any glasses. It is often only mildly successful at sustained reading vision, so we tell patients that they may use reading glasses for prolonged reading vision. This lens is more effective in some patients than others and tends to improve in function over time. We tend to like this lens for many active people who drive at night.

Multifocal Lens Implants:
For most patients over the age of 45, life without reading glasses or bifocals is something they either experienced before presbyopia or they just dreamed about for most of their lives. But today, multifocal lenses are turning those dreams into reality. Dr. Edward Hedaya is a well known New Jersey ReStor and Tecnis specialist. Dr Hedaya has helped many patients from Central New Jersey and South Jersey achieve improved vision using these lifestyle lens.
This class of lens in general gives very good distance and near vision with little or no dependence on glasses after cataract surgery. Each type has its advantages and unique characteristics. LifeStyle lenses like ReStor and Tecnis Multifocal are called multifocal lenses because they split the light between distance and near focus. While patients do not notice this, some patients experience a degree of haloes in certain limited situations, most often from point sources of light at night. Most patients tolerate this very well and find this to be a very significant improvement over their cataracts.
In the clinical study, 80% of patients reported that they never wear glasses for any activities. They can read a book, work on the computer, and drive a car – day or night – and play golf or tennis with an increased freedom from glasses. In fact, patients were so pleased with their vision, nearly 94% of patients said they would have multifocal implanted again, if given the choice.

AcrySof® Toric IOL Lens New Jersey
For patients that have a large degree of astigmatism, who wishes to have only one procedure on their eyes for cataract surgery, this lens is generally the best option for achieving distance vision without glasses. Reading glasses will be needed.
Until the recent introduction of Toric IOLs, people who were considered candidates for intraocular lenses could only have their nearsightedness and farsightedness corrected during lens implant surgery. Patients with astigmatism had to either have corneal refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, or Limbal Relaxation Incisions) after lens implant surgery or remain dependent on glasses or contacts.
Astigmatism is caused by the cornea being more curved in one direction than the other, much like a football. Toric IOLs are specially shaped IOLs designed to offset the imbalance created by the irregular shape of the cornea. Once implanted and aligned inside the eye, they stay fixed in place thereby eliminating pre-existing astigmatism.
Toric IOLs are available to correct even large amounts of astigmatism. Dr. Hedaya will select the Toric IOL that is best suited for your eye condition. There will be additional costs associated with these lenses.
