LASIK
LASIK is performed by cutting a corneal flap and reshaping the contour of the eye with Excimer laser. Traditional microkeratomes or newer femtosecond lasers (IntraLase) create the corneal flap incision in your eye. After reshaping the underlying cornea with the Excimer the corneal flap is replaced. The corneal flap only heals at the edge and not underneath the flap. This means the cornea flap does not add strength to the eye the way it did before the incision. This is a permanent condition.
Dr. Hedaya uses the LADARVISION 4000 flying spot Excimer laser system for the corneal contour reshaping in both the Lasik & Surface laser procedures. The LADARVISION can perform both standard & Custom Laser procedures. (See checkbox below) The LADARVISION uses a combination of propriety software and computer controls to reliably treat myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. The average Lasik procedure takes about 3 minutes per eye, with the laser portion of the procedure averaging less than one minute.
Surface Laser
Surface Laser is a group of laser eye surgery procedures known as PRK or LASEK. Dr Edward Hedaya is a New Jersey Surface Laser (PRK/ LASEK) specialist. This webpage provides information about why Dr Hedaya prefers Surface Laser (PRK/ LASEK) over LASIK. He believes Surface Laser offers greater safety, both short and long term, over Lasik. This holds even if ‘all laser Lasik’ is performed.

The safety of Surface Laser is related to the absence of a corneal flap incision is made. (Press to play PowerPoint). In Surface Laser the integrity and the strength of the corneal is better retained since no surgical flap incision is created as in Lasik. (see comparison chart).Educated patients generally wish to avoid the corneal flap incision of Lasik.
Implantable Contact Lens
The STAAR Visian ICL is a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses. Made of Collamer, STAAR’s proprietary collagen copolymer, the lens rests behind the iris in the ciliary sulcus (view 3D anatomy of the eye). This unique material contains a small amount of collagen, which provides excellent biocompatibility and superior optical capability. The lens is gently folded and injected into the anterior chamber through a 3.0mm, temporal, clear corneal incision. The ICL is then carefully positioned by manipulating the footplates of the lens posterior to the iris plane and into the sulcus. |
